Common Questions

In addition to being a naturopathic physician (N.M.D), Torrey also has his Master of Science Degree in Oriental Medicine and is a licensed acupuncturist.

I’ve tried acupuncture before.  How is Blue Ridge Acupuncture & Integrative Health different from other clinics?

We do so much more than just acupuncture.  We  are a wellness clinic that uses acupuncture as just one of the modalities we use to restore health.  First of all, Torrey Gorla is very highly trained both in Oriental Medicine (not just acupuncture) and Functional medicine, being a NMD, Naturopathic Medical Doctor.  In addition, acupuncture is combined with other treatments as part of a complete wellness system.

What other modalities does Blue Ridge Acupuncture & Integrative Health use to restore its practice members to wellness?

In addition to Oriental and Functional medicine, we support the body’s proper function with targeted supplementation.  Having passed his national board exam in Chinese Herbology, Dr. Torrey has a great understanding of the Chinese herbal formulas and prescribes them as part of the protocol to treat the root cause of the problem.  In addition, he prescribes targeted nutritional formulas to address specific lab findings.

We can further assess patients by running thorough diagnostic testing.  We  test hormones or run thorough blood work relative to the patients age, history, and complaints, which Dr. Torrey has found is rarely properly done in conventional medicine. We don’t have a “one size fits all protocol.”  Each person’s needs are addressed  individually and his or her health care is specifically customized.  And most importantly, we believe in empowering patients with knowledge, so they can make the best healthcare and lifestyle choices with confidence.  Our practice is unique because we combine Eastern Medical care with a Modern Western Science approach.  Lab testing for adrenals/hormones, toxicity issues, minerals, and inflammation may be necessary to eliminate symptoms.  Dr. Torrey’s goal is to find the CAUSE of the disorder and achieve correction, thus health.v

I understand your clinic does complete wellness programs.  Can I just come in for acupuncture?

Yes, of course.  We are proud to say we have been voted Best Acupuncture Clinic three years in a row (2013, 2014, 2015)- since Best Acupuncture Clinic was added as a category.  Even though we offer much more, the power of acupuncture cannot be understated.  We continue to get great results with our treatments!

Why do you teach your patients an educational health curriculum?

We have seen in our years of practice that most people don’t have all the knowledge and tools they need to be healthy and well long term.  There is so much confusing information “out there” that it is hard to know what is best to eat, what nutrients to take, what type of exercise to get, etc.  We take the guess work out of it and design a customized nutritional program just for you (based on your labs), and teach you how to stay well.

Do I have to live locally to participate in your programs?

No.  In fact, we have people from all over the country participating in our program.  We can Skype or do phone calls for appointments, and our curriculum is made available online.

Shouldn’t I just expect my health to decline as I age?  Isn’t that just a normal part of aging?

No,  it is a common myth that our health declines as we age.  It  doesn’t have to be that way.  Being healthy, well, and free of the need for pharmaceuticals is a natural way of being.  Pain and symptoms are simply our body’s way of letting us know that something needs attention.  Regardless of your age, we can help you live pain free, decrease and or diminish the need for pharmaceuticals, prevent disease,  improve your body’s overall function, and your quality of life.

Can Blue Ridge Acupuncture & Integrative Health help me with [my ailment/injury/disease/condition]?

Research has shown that acupuncture regulates many systems, including the nervous, digestive, immune, respiratory, and endocrine systems.  The World Health Organization (WHO) states acupuncture is effective in the treatment of  40 conditions, and the National Institute of Health (NIH) has cited acupuncture to be useful in the treatment of chronic painful conditions.  Our patients range in age from age 2 to 100, and we can assist with any health condition except emergency trauma.

Do the acupuncture needles hurt?

Because acupuncture needles are quite thin, about the size of a hair, solid, and nothing is injected through them, acupuncture is a painless process. Blue Ridge Acupuncture & Integrative Health uses the highest quality needles which are both sterile and disposable, and Torrey is very skillful at needle insertion. Most patients don’t feel needle insertion.  In some cases, it is not necessary to use needles at all. When treating children or sensitive adults, there are other effective techniques. If you have any concerns, please call our office.

What is naturopathy/naturopathic medicine/naturopathic physician (N.M.D.)?

Naturopathic medicine is a distinct system of primary health care-an art, science and practice of preventing, diagnosing, and treating conditions of the human mind and body.  Naturopathic physicians work with their patients to prevent and treat acute and chronic illness and disease, restore health, and establish optimal fitness by supporting the person’s inherent self-healing process.  This is accomplished through prevention, diagnosis, education, and the rational use of natural therapeutics.
Because today’s naturopathic doctors (N.M.D.) believe in understanding patients from the cellular level up, they actively pursue the latest biochemical findings relating to the workings of the body and the dynamics of botanical medicines, nutrition, homeopathy, and other natural therapies.  Their diagnoses and therapeutics are science based and increasingly evidence based. While the training and approach of naturopathic physicians is progressive, naturopathic physicians practice in ways reminiscent of old-fashioned family doctors. They take the time and make the effort to learn about each patient and his/her family.
